Start with 7.50 and count backward?

The earliest versions were still far superior to the other things that were out at the time (SLIGE) but such progress has been made with each version that I have to say it's the 5 most recent for me.

Honestly I still have a soft spot for SLIGE. It generates quests and layouts that feel good to me, even though the overall quality is quite low. I actually wrote a wrapper program to get more customized levels out of it, by looking for key phrases (lifted from the source code) in the output. Stuff like "courtyard" or "big rooms" I think. It'd just re-run over and over until all the criteria were met, and some of those levels were really damn fun.

I want to know which is most preferred version now that we have oblige version 7.666
How do versions 7.50 and 7.55 fare against it.

I was very impressed with 7.50 and 7.666 has obvious improvements, the contrast between the two for me being that 7.50 seems to generate larger rooms with more room to move around in while 7.666 seems to produce more economical and sometimes convoluted layouts (7.55 of course being a transition between the two versions). To generate a really interesting megawad I'd take a few maps from each version and put them together. Each version has its own interesting points.
